I enjoyed the exploration, the trade, the discovery of new ships and upgrading my weapons. Considering I am a “PC Whore” and I spent my valuable game time playing this, that should tell you something.

It had enough depth and activity that I played it through three times, the last two using the expansion (do not know if the expansion is bundled in PC port or not). There’s also “story-driven, mission-based and sandbox gameplay and a trading system”. Features talk of a “vast, living galaxy with over 20 solar systems, dozens of planets, 100 unique space stations and more than 30 customizable spaceships”. The graphics look amazing but there seems to be some depth to be found here too. Other than that it’s unsure what other features this PC version may offer on top of its mobile predecessor Galaxy on Fire 2, if any. GoF2 has now been ported to the PC with what seems to be a major graphical overhaul, therefore the “full HD” on the game’s title.

I don’t know much about this space combat title but apparently it is a major success on the Android and iOS mobile platforms.

Usually it’s the other way around, some games get ported from the PC to mobile devices, but in this case Galaxy on Fire 2’s apparent success led its developers to expand the mobile series further and they are now betting on the PC market.

The impact of this is that the repetitive gameplay feels even more so through this interface and Replayability, as a result, is not high. The Android/iOS 3D space combat and trading simulation game Galaxy on Fire 2 has hit the PC and is now available on Steam, Origin and under the title Galaxy on Fire 2 Full HD. The Spartan approach combines with simplistic combat and poor, unintelligent AI to give an overall feel that the cockpit is distinctly lacking in buttons to press. In an attempt to leave the game as simple as the iOS game the port into the world of PC leaves it inexcusably basic. Lamentably, there’s little that can excuse the interface, which is really very poor. Music needs a fair degree of improvement to reach passable but overall these features overall taint, rather then spoil, the breathtaking visuals. Indeed, the character of Keieth has little charisma and is hampered further by very hammy voice acting. Unfortunately, the missions required for storyline progression hastily merge into one another resulting in a monotonous feel to the game. The campaign feels hashed together at the last minute, the storyline remarkably difficult to get into.

Sadly not all of its design features have enjoyed the tender loving care.

To do so through Galaxy, is to do so in some style. It is hard not to get drawn into the bright lights of gas giants and the universal appeal of visiting distant galaxies the excitement of exploring a newly refurbished space station and the challenge of avoiding the classic trap of inter-stellar travel – asteroids. It is hard not to be moved by the galactic environment as you move a ship through the space equivalent of the Swiss alps. It is marketed, as indicated through its full HD feature heavily emphasised, as a graphically intense game. Galaxy has some truly remarkable features though. Sadly the storyline, whilst imaginatively silly, is left in its casual gamer roots and suffers a great deal of unrealised potential. Through his eyes, you begin exploring this new world and timestream. Maxwell, an unfortunate intrepid explorer who has suffered the misfortune of an engine malfunction resulting in a 35 year displacement in his time stream. Galaxy takes you into the sci-fi world of one Keieth T. Whilst it has maybe missed a trick as it is geared more towards space flight bit rather than developing into a more interesting RPG, it is nonetheless a fine way to enjoy a few hours. It’s stunningly beautiful, if slightly vapid in its storyline, and Galaxy 2 has a relaxing, elegant appeal about it. Galaxy on Fire 2 HD is a space flight/ RPG hybrid whose origins are remarkable – the conversion of a rather fun smartphone game into the expansive jungle world of PC.
